HUD chief Carson offers no help for SF in lightning-fast visit to public housing

Ben Carson, the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, came to San Francisco to visit a public housing project in Potrero Hill. Carson said he was visiting in order to listen and gather facts about California’s homelessness crisis.

Mayor London Breed invited him to speak with her, but she never heard back from him.

Carson suggested he believes that over-regulation and opposition to housing is what is causing the homelessness crisis in San Francisco.

Instead of increasing federal government investment in Section 8 low-income housing vouchers and public housing, the Trump administration has discussed deregulating the housing development process and increasing police enforcement on encampments.
