San Francisco commercial development fees to rise by 143 percent
San Francisco’s Planning Commission approved a bill that will raise the current jobs-housing linkage fee by 143 percent. The fee is imposed on new office construction in order to help pay for affordable housing.
There was a dire need for this bill because the calculation formula for the fee had not been updated since 1996. The fee increase will create an about an additional $50 million per year for the next 10 years.
The money from the fee will be used to buy and renovate rent controlled housing, build permanent supportive housing, and buy small rental buildings for the Small Sites program.
