BiSHoP Rallies for the Housing Opportunity Fund

On May 19th, BiSHoP staff and clients rallied with SF Community Organizers in support of subsidies that address the hardships of extremely low-income (ELI) seniors, working families, and disabled individuals.

The need for such a fund is heavy, especially in a city where affordable housing prices are based on an ever-increasing AMI.

Seniors are increasingly unable to afford to keep their homes, and nearly half of the unhoused population deals with chronic health issues and other physical disabilities that prevent them from making stable income.

The Housing Opportunity Fund, which has been backed by Supervisor Aaron Peskin, seeks to make make 700+ units affordable to ELI households by 2026, and 2,800+ households by 2031 — all for under 0.1% of the city’s estimated 2026 budget.

While this number of units will still be short of the total number of unhoused people in San Francisco, this proposal would make a significant dent into this figure.

As the endless cycle of homelessness continues to repeat itself in San Francisco, many community organizations and coalitions recognize the shortage of subsidized, below-market-rate, and affordable housing options that have created barriers to housing access.

Together, we are fighting on the personal and political stages to secure housing access for San Francisco’s most underfunded, vulnerable, and lowest income populations, with the belief that housing is a human right for all.
